Your sofa works hard. In the Gambian heat it absorbs sweat, dust from open windows, spilled drinks and food. Here is how to clean a fabric sofa at home safely, and how to tell when it needs a professional clean.
Step 1: Check the care label
Look under the cushions for a label with a code:
- W: water-based cleaners are fine.
- S: solvent cleaners only, no water.
- W/S: either is fine.
- X: vacuum only. Leave cleaning to professionals.
Step 2: Vacuum thoroughly
Remove the cushions and vacuum every surface, including the seams and crevices where sand and crumbs collect. Use the upholstery brush attachment.
Step 3: Spot-clean stains
- Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water.
- Test it on a hidden area first.
- Dab the stain with a clean white cloth. Do not rub, because rubbing spreads the stain and damages the fibres.
- Blot with a second cloth dampened with plain water to rinse.
- Blot dry with a towel.
Step 4: Remove smells
Sprinkle baking soda over the fabric, leave it for at least an hour, then vacuum it off.
Step 5: Dry well
Damp fabric in a humid climate can grow mould. Open the windows, switch on a fan, and do not sit on the sofa until it is completely dry.
Signs your sofa needs a professional clean
- It looks darker or greasy on the arms and headrests
- It smells even after you have cleaned it
- There are large or old stains
- Someone in the house has allergies or asthma
- It has not been deep cleaned for over a year
